Hundreds killed in hurricane, Thousands of people injured : Trail of catastrophic devastation in coastal areas

The serious cyclonic storm hurricane SIDR lashed the coastal districts in the southwestern region of the country Thursday midnight leaving over 700 people dead and many injured, killing domestic and wild animals, damaging thousands of houses, uprooting trees and destroying crop lands and vegetable fields.


Reports on the trail of devastation were still reaching the capital Dhaka from different hurricane hit areas till the filing of the report on Friday night. Many people are still missing. The death toll may rise further. Borguna, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Madaripur, Barisal, Bagerhat, Shariatpur and Bhola are the worst hit areas. Tens of thousands of people have been rendered homless.
Dealing a great blow to the life and property across the country, specially the southwestern belt including Barisal and Khulna, the strong SIDR was crossing with a core of hurricane winds packing a speed of up to 240 kph Thursday midnight from the northern Bay of Bengal. All communications, including water ways, bus service and air journey, came to a halt for hours together when the powerful cyclonic storm was crossing the country.
The whole country has plunged into darkness following disruption to the national power grid caused by the powerful hurricane. All metropolitan cities, district towns and all other parts of the country are still remaining without power causing tremendous suffering to the people since the early hours of Friday. Telecommunication system has also collapsed. It was raining heavily with gusty and squally winds all the night.

The whole country went under a total blackout after midnight Thursday as all power stations were damaged under the impact of the hurricane. Later yesterday afternoon, the power supply was restored. But shortly the country again plunged into total darkness following the disaster at the national power grid. The countrymen are failing to get information about the actual death toll in the hurricane and the devastation caused by it as all satellite television channels and state-owned BTV went off the air.
According to reports so far received from the affected districts, at least 100 people have died and some are 300 missing in Bagherhat, at least 105 people have died and hundreds more been injured in Borguna, 171 people have died in Patuakhali while some 20 people died and over 700 have been injured in Shariatpur district. Besides, at least 76 were killed in Barisal, 27 in Jhalokathi. The powerful hurricane also killed 103 in Bhola and 30 in Pirojpur
Many dead bodies and domestic animals were found floating in the rivers. Low-lying areas of many coastal districts, including the district towns, were inundated as a 15-20 feet storm surge whipped by raging winds washed the areas.
Thousands of people were injured in the south and southwestern regions and most of the dwelling houses were either fully or partially damaged in the devastation caused by the cyclonic storm, one of the worst in the country.
What happened to the people in backwater Dublarchar, including thousands of fishermen, could not be unknown as local administration failed to contact them. A team of the coastguard from Mongla set out for the offshore island in the morning.
Anxious people across the country faced difficulty in getting information about the death and devastation caused by the terrible cyclone that pounded on the country’s south and southwestern regions since Thursday evening.
