The powerful cyclonic storm battered the capital Dhaka Thursday midnight killing at least six people damaging thousands of thatched houses and uprooting trees.
The capital plunged into darkness following disruption to the national power grid. Six people died in the severe hurricane SIDR in different parts of the capital on Thursday midnight.
On information, police recovered the dead bodies from the High Court majar gate, Jagannath Hall crossing, Doel Chattar and Dhaka Club areas.
Police sources said, “The deceased were all homeless people. Some of them died falling under collapsed trees and some due to severe coldness.”
Meanwhile, thousands of slum dwellers became shelter-less in Mirpur, Agargaon, Tejgaon, Mohammadpur and in old-Dhaka areas and they are passing days under the open sky. Morzina, a slum-dweller of Agargaon, yelled “I do not know where I shall go. My only shelter, the slum was destroyed by the cyclone.”
No sooner had the strong wind attacked the capital, then the power supply was disconnected till the filing of this report last night. Electricity failure coupled with water shortage resulted in untold suffering to the city-dwellers.
Besides, most of the CNG-run-buses and three-wheelers were not plying the city streets as the CNG fuel stations could not refill gas due to electricity failure. The passengers suffered from transport problems for unavailability of buses. Leave of the LGED, PWD, WASA and DESA officials and employees has been cancelled to tackle the situation while police, RAB and other intelligence agencies deployed at different strategic points in the capital to avert any untoward situation.
