All efforts to contain price hike frustrated
Staff CorrespondentDespite the chief adviser’s directive to monitor the prices of daily necessities, no measures are proving effective as the prices of essentials are increasing at a high rate across the country frustrating all the government and non-government efforts to contain prices.
Sufferings of the people belonging to the low and fixed income groups are mounting.
In the city kitchen markets, no retailers are following the rates fixed by the joint force and price-monitoring of daily commodities is now totally abandoned.
The prices of rice, edible oil, potato, pulses are on the rise while the prices of vegetables remain stable in the city’s markets. Prices of edible oil and onion have set up a new record, as edible oil is selling at Tk 95 per litre and onion at Tk 70 per kg.
Meanwhile, the price of green chili has gone down by Tk 10 per kg, as it has been selling at 50 taka per Kg.
Talking to this correspondent, Jewel Hawlader , a retailer said, ” Due to the cyclone SIDR, in the coming days, the supply of different essentials may fall in markets , so the price of these items may rise further. Besides, prices of edible oil and pulses would rise further as the prices of these items are on the rise in the international market”.
The prices of broiler chicken and beef remained stable while prices of hilsha and other fishes marked a sharp rise.
Yesterday hilsha was selling at Tk 350 per kg. Besides, Ruhi was selling at Tk 160 per kg.
On Friday, coarse rice was selling at Tk 27-28 per kg, fine quality najirshail at Tk 39-40, miniket at Tk 36, imported onion at Tk 60, local lentil at Tk 84, imported lentils at Tk 76, flour at Tk 44 per kg.
Potato was selling at Tk 24, patal at Tk 24, cucumber at Tk 20 and tomato at Tk 60, kakrol at Tk 28 per kg.
The prices of vegetables still remaining stable as in the previous week though there is huge supply of vegetables in the markets.
The consumers alleged that the business syndicates are mainly responsible for the soaring prices of essentials while the consumers blamed the wholesalers for price hike of daily necessities.Source:www.thebangladeshtoday.com
